Trip Overview

The Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra is one of the most powerful spiritual experiences available to a Hindu pilgrim in India. Each year over 8 million devotees make this journey — from all walks of life, all ages and all corners of the country — drawn by faith in the divine Mother who took her eternal abode in the Trikuta Mountains at 5,200 feet above sea level. The 14 km trek from Katra begins at Banganga, the sacred water spring created when Mata shot an arrow into the earth to quench her thirst during Bhairon Nath's pursuit. The route passes Charan Paduka — where the imprints of the Goddess's feet are preserved in rock — and Ardh Kwari cave, where Mata meditated for nine months while evading Bhairon Nath. This cave requires pilgrims to squeeze through a narrow passage — a symbolic womb, representing rebirth. The final ascent to the Bhawan cave shrine, where the three natural Pindis glow in the light of oil lamps, is one of the most profoundly moving moments a pilgrim can experience. NorthYatra's 3-day Vaishno Devi yatra package is the ideal entry-level pilgrimage offering — covering all logistics from Jammu arrival to departure, with hotel in Katra, meals, yatra slip assistance and complete on-ground support. Physically able pilgrims of all ages complete this trek with great joy and spiritual fulfilment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Vaishno Devi trek suitable for first-time pilgrims?

Absolutely. The 14 km trek is well-marked with signboards, food stalls every 2 km, first aid centres, emergency phones and medical posts throughout. Thousands of first-time pilgrims complete it with ease every day.

What should I carry for the Vaishno Devi trek?

Carry comfortable trekking shoes (no heels), a light backpack, water bottle, a light jacket, energy snacks, personal medicine and your Yatra Slip. Heavy luggage can be deposited at cloak rooms in Katra.

What is the best time to start the Vaishno Devi trek?

Start between midnight and 4 AM to avoid peak crowds and complete the darshan by afternoon. This timing also avoids the midday heat in summer.

Is the Ardh Kwari cave mandatory on the Vaishno Devi yatra?

Ardh Kwari is not strictly mandatory but most pilgrims visit it as it is spiritually significant and part of the traditional yatra route. The Garbh Joon — a 30-metre narrow passage inside — symbolises rebirth.

How much does pony or palki cost on the Vaishno Devi route?

Pony charges from Katra to Bhawan are approximately Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 (one way) depending on season. Palki is around Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000. These are payable directly on the route and are not part of NorthYatra's package.

What happens if I cannot complete the full trek?

Battery-operated vehicles are available from Katra to Banganga Gate. Ponies, palkis and helicopters are options for different legs. NorthYatra will guide you on the best option for your fitness level.

How long does the complete Vaishno Devi yatra take on foot?

A typical yatra takes 7 to 9 hours to reach the Bhawan and 5 to 7 hours to return — a full day of walking. Most pilgrims start at midnight or early morning to complete it in one stretch.
