The dhams open around Akshaya Tritiya (late April/early May) and close after Diwali — a six-month season split in two by the monsoon. Choosing your window well is the single biggest factor in a smooth yatra.
Best time to visit Char Dham: May–June and September–October (temples closed November–April)
The classic yatra window — kapat-opening ceremonies, snow still banked beside the trails and every camp buzzing. It is also the busiest stretch; book hotels and helicopters well ahead.
Garhwal receives heavy rain; landslides and road holds are common and Kedarnath treks turn slippery. Committed pilgrims still travel (crowds are thin and the hills are luminous green) but flexible, buffer-heavy itineraries are essential.
Washed skies, sharp Himalayan views and moderate crowds until the closing ceremonies after Diwali. Nights get properly cold by October, and the light on the peaks is the year's best.
The murtis move to winter seats (Ukhimath, Mukhba, Kharsali, Joshimath) and the high temples are snowbound. Winter-seat darshan is possible and quietly beautiful — ask us about winter Char Dham circuits.

Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya (late April/early May); Kedarnath and Badrinath follow within days. All four close between Bhai Dooj and mid-November, after Diwali.
May–June has the festive opening buzz and warmer days but heavy crowds. September–October offers clearer mountain views, easier bookings and calmer darshan. For photography and peace, autumn wins.
It is possible but not recommended for first-timers — July–August brings landslide-prone roads and slippery treks. If you must, keep buffer days, travel mornings only and follow local advisories.
