Best Time to Visit Amarnath

There is no "choosing" a season here — the yatra window itself is fixed each year (roughly late June/early July to Raksha Bandhan in August), when the ice Shivling is formed and the high passes are open.

Best time to visit Amarnath: The official yatra window: late June/July to August (announced annually)

Season by season

Amarnath through the year

Late Jun – mid Jul 5–18°C (base) / -2–10°C (cave)

Early yatra — the ice lingam at its fullest

The Shivling is at its largest early in the window, snow bridges still span the streams and the meadows are intensely green. Trails can be slushy; crowds build after the first week.

Mid Jul – early Aug 8–20°C (base)

Peak yatra

The busiest, most festive stretch — langars in full swing, camps buzzing every night. Monsoon spillover can bring afternoon rain; helicopter schedules occasionally shuffle with weather.

Aug (till Raksha Bandhan) 6–18°C (base)

Closing weeks

Crowds ease and the Chhari Mubarak (holy mace) procession culminates at the cave on Shravan Purnima. The lingam has usually receded by now — go early in the window if seeing it full matters most.

Timing tips from our team

  • Registrations open in spring and date-slots fill fast — plan by April–May.
  • The first two weeks show the ice Shivling at its fullest.
  • Weekdays early in the window have the shortest darshan queues.
  • Train for the altitude: 30–45 minutes of daily brisk walking for a month helps enormously.

Best time to visit Amarnath — FAQs

When does the Amarnath Yatra start and end?

The Shrine Board announces exact dates each year, but the window typically runs from late June or early July to Raksha Bandhan (August full moon) — roughly 40–60 days.

When is the ice Shivling biggest?

At the start of the yatra. The lingam waxes with the moon and gradually recedes as the season warms, so early-window pilgrims see it at its most magnificent.

Can I visit the Amarnath cave outside the yatra?

No — the route is closed and unsafe outside the official window, with heavy snow on the passes and no camps, langars or security in place.
