Dharamshala and its upper town McLeodganj cling to the Dhauladhar foothills above the Kangra valley. A nearby airport, an overnight bus network and a broad-gauge railhead at Pathankot cover all arrival styles.
Gaggal / Kangra Airport (DHM) is just 13 km from Dharamshala (30–40 min) with daily flights from Delhi (~80 min) and seasonal Chandigarh links. Flights are small-aircraft and can be weather-affected in monsoon.
Pathankot (PTK/ Pathankot Cantt) is the nearest major railhead, ~85 km / 2.5–3 h away, on the Delhi–Jammu trunk route. The Kangra Valley narrow-gauge line from Pathankot to Kangra is slow but staggeringly scenic if you have the time.
Delhi–Dharamshala is ~480 km (10–11 h) via NH44 through Ambala, Chandigarh outskirts and Una or via Pathankot; overnight Volvos (HRTC/private) from Delhi Majnu ka Tila are the standard. Chandigarh is 240 km (6 h); Amritsar 200 km (4.5–5 h).
Dharamshala→McLeodganj is 9 km of hairpins (shared cabs and local buses shuttle constantly). Triund trek starts from Dharamkot/Gallu; day cabs cover Palampur tea gardens, Kangra fort and Norbulingka.

Gaggal (Kangra) airport, 13 km from Dharamshala and about 22 km from McLeodganj — roughly 45 minutes door to door. Daily Delhi flights take ~80 minutes.
About 85 km — a 2.5–3 hour taxi or bus ride. Pathankot sits on the Delhi–Jammu main line, making rail+road a comfortable budget route.
They are twin towns 9 km apart: Dharamshala is the lower administrative town (cricket stadium, markets) while McLeodganj above is the Tibetan quarter with the Dalai Lama temple, cafés and trek trailheads.
