Trip Overview

Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh and the former summer capital of British India, is the most visited hill station in the country — and with good reason. Perched at 2,200 metres in the Shivalik ranges, Shimla is a town that wears its colonial heritage proudly — Christ Church (1857), the Gaiety Theatre (1887), the Viceregal Lodge (1888) and dozens of Victorian buildings line its famous Mall Road, which has been a pedestrian promenade since the days of the Raj. The Ridge, the large open plaza in the heart of Shimla, is the social centre of the town — and on clear days, the panoramic view of snow-capped peaks including the Chail Sanctuary Range from here is simply breathtaking. The famous Christ Church, second oldest in North India, stands at one end of the Ridge with its unusual rose window and colonial memorial tablets. Jakhu Temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman at 2,455 metres — the highest point in Shimla — is reached by a 2 km forest walk or a ropeway. The temple sits in a forest of oak and rhododendron, with Hanuman's footprint preserved in a stone and hundreds of monkeys (considered sacred here) running freely through the trees. The views of the Himalayas from Jakhu on a clear day are extraordinary. Kufri, 13 km from Shimla at 2,622 metres, is famous for its snow sports in winter — skiing, snowboarding, pony rides and tobogganing — and for the Himalayan Wildlife Park that houses Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear and Tibetan Wolf in a natural forested setting. The Kalka-Shimla Narrow Gauge Railway — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that snakes through 102 tunnels over 96 km — is one of the world's most spectacular mountain railway journeys, fully deserving of a ride for at least part of the route.
