Trip Overview

Kasol — a tiny hamlet on the right bank of the Parvati River at 1,640 metres in Kullu district — has become one of India's most beloved backpacker destinations. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, dense conifer forests and the roaring jade-green Parvati River, Kasol has an atmosphere of total disconnection from the rush of modern life. Israeli restaurants serving shakshuka and falafel, Tibetan momos stalls, bonfires by the river and the sound of acoustic guitar from a dozen guesthouses give Kasol a uniquely eclectic, international character. The Kheerganga trek, starting from Barshaini (15 km from Kasol), is one of Himachal Pradesh's most popular and rewarding treks — a moderate 12 km trail through dense forest, past waterfalls and small villages to the sacred meadow of Kheerganga at 2,950 metres. The trail follows the Parvati River for much of its length, crossing wooden bridges and skirting boulders in a landscape of extraordinary beauty. The reward at the top is a natural open-air sulphur hot spring pool, considered sacred to Lord Shiva, where after a 5 to 6 hour uphill trek you can lower yourself into warm, healing water with snow peaks on the horizon — one of the finest trekking rewards in Himachal Pradesh. Manikaran Gurudwara, 4 km from Kasol, is one of the holiest Sikh and Hindu pilgrimage sites in the Kullu district — a striking golden gurdwara built over natural geothermal hot springs so powerful that the langar kitchen (free community kitchen) cooks food in the boiling spring water. Tosh village, at the head of the Tosh Nala valley 5 km from Barshaini, is a remote traditional village with unobstructed views of the Parvati range peaks — a favourite camping and hiking destination for travellers seeking even further solitude than Kasol offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kheerganga trek suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Kheerganga trek is one of Himachal's best beginner treks — 12 km with a moderate gradient, no technical climbing and a clear, well-marked trail. It takes 5 to 6 hours uphill. Trekking shoes (not sandals or sneakers) are essential.

When is the best time to trek to Kheerganga?

May to June and September to October are the best months. July to August is monsoon with risk of landslides and slippery trails. November the trail gets icy and December to April the route is covered in snow and accessible only for the fit and experienced.

Is the Manikaran hot spring safe to dip in?

Yes. The hot springs at Manikaran are natural sulphur springs used for bathing for centuries. The Gurudwara has separate bathing sections. The water temperature is very hot (near boiling) in some spots — exercise caution.

Can this package be done from Delhi in a long weekend?

Yes. Take an overnight bus or cab from Delhi Thursday night, arrive Kasol Friday morning. Trek Kheerganga on Saturday. Depart Sunday night, arrive Delhi Monday morning. A tight but doable long weekend.

Is Kasol safe for solo women travellers?

Yes, Kasol has a strong international backpacker community and is generally safe. Standard solo travel precautions apply. The guesthouses are experienced with solo travellers including women.

What is the Kheerganga hot spring mythology?

Kheerganga is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva meditated for 3,000 years. The hot spring is therefore considered sacred to Shiva. The meadow name Kheerganga means the white milk river — referring to the glacier streams that flow through.

How cold is it at Kheerganga overnight?

At 2,950 m, Kheerganga nights can be quite cold — 5°C to 10°C in summer, below 0°C in October. Carry a good sleeping bag and warm layers. Kheerganga camps provide blankets but personal sleeping bag is recommended.
