Best Time to Visit Kerala

Kerala is warm year-round; the variable is rain. Two monsoons frame a golden dry season — and the rains themselves are the prime time for ayurveda.

Kerala tour packages Destination guide

Best time to visit Kerala: September to March; June–August for ayurveda and green-season value

Season by season

Kerala through the year

Sep – Nov 23–32°C

Post-monsoon — everything fresh

The land is rinsed and brilliant green, waterfalls run full, backwaters brim and the crowds haven't peaked. Onam (Aug–Sep) brings feasts and snake-boat races. Arguably the smartest window of the year.

Dec – Feb 22–32°C

Peak winter season

Dry, sunny and at its most comfortable — Munnar mornings drop to a crisp 10°C while the coast stays balmy. Christmas–New Year in Kochi and the beach belt is festive and busy; book early.

Mar – May 26–36°C

Summer

Hot and humid on the coast but Munnar, Wayanad and Thekkady stay pleasantly cool — this is hill-station season within Kerala. Thrissur Pooram (Apr–May) is the state's most spectacular festival.

Monsoon — ayurveda season

The southwest monsoon drums in by early June. Traditionally the best period for ayurvedic treatment (cool, moist air opens the body to therapy), with resorts running serious packages at gentle prices. Landscapes are at maximum green.

Timing tips from our team

  • September–October delivers December's beauty at October's prices.
  • For serious ayurveda, the monsoon (especially Karkidakam month, Jul–Aug) is the classical season.
  • Munnar needs a light jacket even in March; nights are genuinely cool.
  • Houseboats for Christmas week sell out by early November.

Best time to visit Kerala — FAQs

What is the best time for a Kerala houseboat cruise?

September to March — post-monsoon water levels are ideal and skies dry. Within that, September–November combines full backwaters with lighter crowds and softer prices.

Is monsoon a good time to visit Kerala?

For ayurveda, yes — it is the classical treatment season and resorts offer their best programmes. For sightseeing it is wet but atmospheric; beaches are rough, hills misty and prices at their lowest.

When is Munnar at its best?

October to March for crisp mornings and clear tea-garden views. Every 12 years the neelakurinji blooms turn the hills blue — a phenomenon worth planning an entire trip around.
