Trip Overview

The Kerala backwaters are among the world's most unique ecosystems — a 900-km network of lagoons, lakes, rivers, and canals winding through rice paddies, coconut groves, and fishing villages along the Arabian Sea coast. At the heart of this watery world is Alleppey (Alappuzha), the Venice of the East, where traditional kettuvallam houseboats drift peacefully through channels that have barely changed in centuries. This 3-day package puts you right in the middle of it all. You'll board a private fully-equipped houseboat — complete with bedroom, bathroom, sundeck, and an onboard chef cooking fresh Kerala meals — for an overnight stay on the backwaters. As you glide through the canals of Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in Kerala, you'll spot Chinese fishing nets, women drying paddy on the banks, children playing by the water, and a spectacular variety of birds including kingfishers, cormorants, and the rare painted stork. Before boarding, you'll explore Alleppey town — its famous beach with its 140-year-old pier, the serene Pathiramanal Island accessible only by boat, and the traditional coir-weaving villages along the waterways. This is slow travel at its finest — the kind that stays with you long after you return home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Kerala houseboat (kettuvallam)?

A kettuvallam is a traditional Kerala rice barge converted into a luxury floating home. Modern houseboats have fully furnished bedrooms, bathrooms with hot water, a living area with windows, a rooftop sundeck, and an onboard kitchen where a private chef cooks fresh Kerala meals throughout your cruise.

What is the best time to visit Alleppey for a houseboat experience?

October to March is the best time for a Kerala backwaters houseboat experience — cool weather, calm waters, and beautiful greenery. November–February is peak season. July–September (monsoon) is when the backwaters are lush and green, but occasionally rough — houseboat cruises still operate but may have limited routes.

How far is Alleppey from Cochin Airport?

Alleppey (Alappuzha) is approximately 55 km from Cochin International Airport, about a 1.5-hour drive. Our package includes direct airport pick-up and transfer to your houseboat jetty.

Are houseboats safe for children and elderly travellers?

Yes. Modern houseboats have railings and life jackets onboard. Crew members are trained for safety. Houseboats are most suitable for children above 5 years. Elderly travellers generally find the calm backwaters very relaxing. Let us know any specific requirements and we'll arrange accordingly.

What meals are served on the houseboat?

An onboard chef prepares traditional Kerala cuisine — breakfast includes idli, dosa, appam, and filter coffee. Lunch and dinner typically feature fish curry, prawn roast, coconut rice, avial, and payasam (dessert). Vegetarian options are always available.

Can I extend this package to include Munnar or Thekkady?

Absolutely! We recommend combining Alleppey backwaters with Munnar (tea estates) and Thekkady (Periyar wildlife sanctuary) for a complete Kerala experience. A 7-day extension covering all three is our most popular Kerala circuit package.

Is the Alleppey backwaters different from Kumarakom backwaters?

Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the more popular backwater destination with a larger network of canals and more houseboat operators. Kumarakom on Vembanad Lake is quieter and more upscale, preferred by luxury travellers. Both are equally beautiful — NorthYatra can arrange houseboats at either location.
