Trip Overview

While Goa gets the beach crowds, Kovalam remains Kerala's quiet alternative — a crescent-shaped lighthouse beach that feels genuinely tropical without the tourist excess. The waves are calmer than most Indian beaches, making it ideal for safe swimming, and the shoreline is flanked by a row of excellent Ayurvedic centres, fresh seafood restaurants, and small boutique hotels. Kovalam's beaches come in three sections: Lighthouse Beach (the most popular, named for the red-and-white Vizhinjam lighthouse perched on the headland), Hawah Beach, and the secluded Samudra Beach. Each has its own character, and together they offer a full beach experience — morning swims, afternoon reading under a palm, and sunset yoga on the sand. Just 16 km away is Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), Kerala's capital and one of India's most culturally rich cities. The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple — dedicated to Lord Vishnu, reportedly housing one of the world's largest treasures — is the city's spiritual heart. The Napier Museum, with its extraordinary collection of Kerala bronzes and ivory carvings, the Kanakakunnu Palace, and the vibrant Chalai Bazaar complete the cultural picture. This is South Kerala's essential itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kovalam famous for?

Kovalam is Kerala's most famous beach resort — known for its crescent-shaped Lighthouse Beach, calm waters safe for swimming, traditional Ayurvedic massage centres, fresh seafood, and a relaxed atmosphere. It's far less commercialised than Goa beaches, attracting travellers looking for authentic tropical relaxation.

How far is Kovalam from Trivandrum airport?

Kovalam is just 16 km from Trivandrum International Airport — approximately a 30-minute drive. It's one of India's most conveniently located beach destinations relative to a major international airport.

Is swimming safe at Kovalam Beach?

Kovalam's Lighthouse Beach and Hawah Beach are generally safe for swimming with lifeguards on duty during peak season (October–March). The waves are calmer than at Goa or the Konkan coast. However, always check for red flags (no swimming) and swim only in designated safe zones.

What Ayurvedic treatments are available at Kovalam?

Kovalam has numerous AYUSH-certified Ayurvedic centres offering classical treatments including abhyanga (full body oil massage), shirodhara (medicated oil poured on forehead), Kizhi (herbal pouch massage), and Panchakarma detox programs. Most centres also offer yoga and meditation. This package includes 1 massage session.

What is Poovar Island and is it worth visiting?

Poovar Island is a unique estuary 25 km from Kovalam where the Neyyar River meets the backwaters and the Arabian Sea. The boat ride through dense mangrove forests and the scenic floating restaurant/cottage resort make it a memorable half-day trip — highly recommended for nature lovers and photographers.

Can I extend this package to include Alleppey backwaters?

Yes! A natural extension is to add Alleppey houseboat (2 nights) and Thekkady (2 nights) before arriving at Kovalam, creating a 7–8 day South Kerala tour. NorthYatra can customise this for you at competitive rates.

What local food must I try in Trivandrum?

Trivandrum is famous for its traditional Kerala sadya (banana leaf feast), Kerala prawn curry, karimeen (pearl spot fish), beef fry (a local favourite), puttu and kadala curry (for breakfast), and unniyappam (sweet fried rice dumplings). The Chalai Bazaar area has excellent authentic local restaurants.
