The Amarnath cave (3,880 m) opens for barely two months each year, reached by two routes — the classic Pahalgam trail and the steeper, shorter Baltal climb. Both begin in the Kashmir valley, so all journeys route through Srinagar or Jammu.
Fly to Srinagar (SXR), then drive to base camp: Pahalgam is ~90 km (3 h) and Baltal ~95 km (3.5 h) from the airport. During the yatra, book flights the moment your RFID registration is confirmed — July fares climb steeply.
Jammu Tawi and Katra (SVDK) are the practical railheads, followed by a road journey into the valley (Jammu–Pahalgam ~250 km). Many pilgrims combine Vaishno Devi darshan at Katra with the Amarnath yatra in one trip — our most-requested combo package.
Yatra convoys run from Jammu and Srinagar to both base camps with security escort at fixed departure times. From Pahalgam the trek is ~46 km over 3–5 days via Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni; from Baltal it is a steep 14 km, doable in a single hard day up-and-down.
