That is the short answer. The longer one matters, because helicopter booking is the most stressful part of planning this yatra and it is not the form that makes it hard. It is that the seats are few and the demand is enormous. The flight turns a climb of four to five hours into about eight minutes in the air and leaves you a 2.5 km walk from the Bhawan. Every family with elderly parents wants those seats, which is why they vanish in minutes on busy dates.

What follows is the honest version: how booking actually works in 2026, what the rules really are at the helipad, and where people lose money. How Vaishno Devi helicopter booking works

There is exactly one place that sells these tickets: the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board portal at online.maavaishnodevi.org, and the official Mata Vaishnodevi app. The Shrine Board has not authorised a single travel agent to sell helicopter seats. It has gone as far as filing police complaints against fake helicopter booking websites. The rule is simple. If a site promises you a guaranteed seat at a premium, it is not official, whatever its domain name suggests.

The flight runs on one fixed sector, Katra to Sanjichhat and back. No helicopter lands at the Bhawan itself, and this sector does not lift from Jammu airport. Two operators fly it, Global Vectra Helicorp and Himalayan Heli Services, on six seat machines. You do not choose the operator. The portal assigns your flight.

Current fare and the November 2026 price change

As of September 2026 the fare is ₹2,320 per person one way and ₹4,640 return, in force since 16 October 2025. From 1 November 2026 it rises 16.4 percent to ₹2,700 one way and ₹5,400 return, an increase of ₹380 and ₹760, reported by PTI and NewsX in September 2026 and attributed to aviation fuel costs. If you are travelling in November or later, budget for the new fare. The Shrine Board has already loaded those dates at the revised rate.

Vaishno Devi helicopter booking step by step

1. Open online.maavaishnodevi.org and register with your mobile number and email, then verify the OTP.
2. Log in and open Helicopter Booking under Online Services.
3. Choose your sector, Katra to Sanjichhat one way or the return.
4. Pick your travel date. The window opens 60 days ahead at 10:00 AM IST, so seats for a given day appear exactly 60 days before it.
5. Enter every passenger exactly as printed on the photo ID they will carry. Up to five passengers per booking.
6. Pay by card, net banking or UPI.
7. Download and print the e-ticket straight away, and save the PDF to your phone.

One warning the official site gives itself and almost nobody repeats. If your payment fails but money leaves your account, do not rebook immediately. Log in and check Failed Transaction and Refund Status first, or you may well pay twice.

The 10 AM scramble, and what to do when booking is not opening

On Navratri dates and summer weekends, seats for a popular day can be gone in two to three minutes. Be logged in before 10. Have every passenger detail saved and your payment method ready. If the portal freezes at 10:00, that is server load rather than your connection, so do not refresh repeatedly during a payment or you risk a double charge.

If online is sold out, there is a current helicopter ticket counter at Niharika Bhawan near the Katra bus stand, where unsold same day seats are released. People queue there from around 5 AM, and you must already hold your Yatra Registration Slip and travel proof to buy. It is a genuine fallback, not a rumour, but treat it as a bonus rather than a plan.

Rules at the helipad that catch people out

• Report one hour before your flight time. Late arrival is treated as a No Show with no refund.
• Carry the same original photo ID you booked with. CRPF checks originals at the gate and photocopies are refused.
• One hand bag up to 5 kg per person. Trolley bags and heavy luggage do not go on board. Leave them at the Katra cloakroom.
• Total weight of passengers plus bags cannot exceed 480 kg on a six seater or 540 kg on a seven seater, so a heavy group may be split across two sorties.
• Children under 2 fly free on a lap. Children of 2 and above need a booked seat at full fare.
• You still need the free RFID Yatra Parchi before you fly. The helicopter ticket does not replace it, and on the Katra sector it does not by itself give you priority darshan.

That last point surprises people every week. Priority darshan comes with the premium Jammu to Bhawan service, not with a Katra to Sanjichhat seat. Once you land, read what actually happens after you land at Sanjichhat so the walk down does not catch you out either.

Cancellation, refunds and weather

Cancel online only, up to two days before travel, for a 70 percent refund. The remaining 30 percent is kept as processing. Counter and phone cancellations are not accepted for tickets bought online. If the operator cancels your flight for weather or a technical fault you get 100 percent back, but you have to hand your ticket to the operator at the helipad to start that refund. Money returns to the card you paid with, usually inside about 15 days.

The return leg is where plans come apart. If your Sanjichhat to Katra flight is grounded by afternoon weather, you come down by battery car, pony or on foot, and only the unflown leg is refunded. Build a spare half day into your plan so a weather hold costs you an afternoon rather than your train home. That is exactly why our Katra packages keep a buffer day.
