The Katra to Sanjichhat helicopter takes about eight minutes in the air. Sanjichhat is not the Bhawan: the helipad sits at roughly 6,200 feet and the shrine is about 2.5 km away and a little lower, near 5,200 feet, so you finish on foot, by battery car or on a pony.

For most families the flight is the easy part. What matters more is where Sanjichhat actually is, what you do after you land, and how the return works. Get those right and the helicopter is the smoothest way to reach Mata's Bhawan. Get them wrong and you can still end up walking further than you planned, in the dark, with a train to catch. The route and the flight time

The flight lifts from the Katra helipad on Udhampur Road, about 2 km from the Katra bus stand, and lands at Sanjichhat high on the Trikuta range. It is roughly eight minutes each way, weather permitting. Machines run from about 8:30 AM, roughly every 20 minutes, until around 7:00 PM in season, though frequency and hours shift with daylight and weather rather than following a fixed timetable.

The climb you would otherwise have walked over four to five hours is done before your ears have finished popping. That is the whole proposition, and on a clear morning the view across the Trikuta ridge is worth the fare on its own.

What happens when you land at Sanjichhat

Sanjichhat is a plateau above the steepest section of the old track, not the shrine. From the helipad the Bhawan is about 2.5 km away, and because the Bhawan sits lower, the walk is a gentle descent rather than a climb. Most people take 30 to 60 minutes at an unhurried pace. It is paved, busy and well lit, with tea stalls and toilets along the way.

This is the single most misunderstood part of flying to Vaishno Devi. People book the helicopter believing it removes all walking, then arrive with a parent who genuinely cannot manage two and a half kilometres. If that is your situation, plan the last stretch before you fly, not at the helipad.

After darshan, the ropeway from the Bhawan to Bhairon Ghati costs ₹100 up and down and saves a steep 3.5 km climb. That matters more than it sounds, because the yatra is traditionally counted complete only after Bhairon Nath. The Skywalk near the Bhawan, a 200 metre elevated walkway opened in October 2023, separates incoming and outgoing crowds and has made this whole stretch far calmer than it used to be.

The return leg, and why it confuses people

If you booked a return, you fly back from Sanjichhat to Katra and must report at the Sanjichhat helipad inside the window the operator gives you. Here is the catch that costs people money and trains. Weather on the range turns quickly, and afternoon flights are the first to be grounded. If your return is cancelled you descend by battery car, pony or on foot, and only the unflown leg is refunded, once the counter at the helipad has endorsed your ticket.

Booking an early slot and keeping a spare half day is the single best insurance against this. An 8:30 AM flight up gives you the whole day to absorb a problem. A 2:00 PM flight up does not. Weather, seasons and when flights get grounded

Low cloud over Sanjichhat is the usual culprit, and it is most common through the monsoon weeks of July and August and during a January snow spell. Winter flying is often fine but can stop without much notice.

Nothing about this is unusual for mountain helicopter operations, and the operators are conservative for good reason. Plan as though one leg may not fly, and you will never be caught out.
