Trip Overview

The Shimla-Manali circuit is the most popular hill station itinerary in India and one of the finest road trips in the subcontinent. These two destinations — separated by 260 km of spectacular mountain highway through the Kullu Valley — offer entirely different but equally magnificent experiences, making their combination deeply satisfying. Shimla captivates with the grandeur of its colonial past — the Mall Road pedestrian promenade, Christ Church, the Viceregal Lodge (once home to the Viceroy of British India), the monkey-filled forests of Jakhu Hill and the snow slopes of Kufri. It is a city of leisurely walks, warm cafes, Himachali craft bazaars and views of the Himalayan horizon. The 260 km drive from Shimla to Manali along NH3 through the Kullu Valley is itself a journey — past orchards of apple, plum, pear and cherry, through Bilaspur and Mandi, along the Beas River gorge, past Pandoh Dam's shimmering reservoir and into the Kullu Valley floor. Kullu town, famous for its traditional shawls and the Dussehra festival, sits at the confluence of the Beas and Parbati rivers. Manali then unleashes its full energy — Solang Valley's year-round adventure sports, the dramatic Rohtang Pass crossing at 3,978 metres, the cedar-forest temple of Hadimba Devi, the sulphur hot springs at Vashisht, the Buddhist monasteries and the wonderfully bohemian cafes and guesthouses of Old Manali. This 7-day tour is ideal for families, couples, friend groups and first-time Himachal visitors.
