Trip Overview

Pahalgam — from the Kashmiri Pehel (shepherd) and Gam (village), the Village of Shepherds — sits at 2,130 metres in the Lidder Valley, 96 km from Srinagar, and is arguably Kashmir's most naturally beautiful destination. Unlike the cultural richness of Srinagar or the alpine drama of Gulmarg, Pahalgam offers a pastoral, unhurried beauty — the Lidder River rushing through pines and meadows, distant peaks visible at every turn, and a network of valleys fanning out in every direction, each one a world unto itself. Betaab Valley, 15 km from Pahalgam, was made famous by the 1983 Bollywood film Betaab starring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh, and has since been a location for dozens of films and advertisements. Its lush green floor, pine-forested slopes and cold clear streams make it one of the most photographed valleys in Kashmir. Aru Valley, 11 km from Pahalgam, is even more pristine — a wide meadow surrounded by snow-capped peaks and pine forests, virtually free of commercialisation. It is the base for the Kolahoi Glacier trek and the Tarsar-Marsar alpine lakes trek — two of Kashmir's finest multi-day treks. Even for casual visitors, an afternoon walk in Aru is transformative. Baisaran meadow — accessible by pony 5 km from Pahalgam — sits at 2,700 metres in a natural alpine bowl ringed by pine forests, and is so reminiscent of Swiss alpine landscapes that it is universally called Mini Switzerland. A pony ride to Baisaran is the single most popular activity in Pahalgam and should not be missed. Chandanwari at 2,895 metres is the base camp for the Amarnath Yatra and has a dramatic snow point accessible year-round. This 3-day package covers all four of Pahalgam's highlights in a relaxed, well-paced itinerary.
