Trip Overview
Jodhpur, the 'Blue City' and second largest city of Rajasthan, is dominated by the awe-inspiring Mehrangarh Fort — rising 120 metres sheer from the rocky outcrop above the city. Founded in 1459, Mehrangarh is one of India's largest and most imposing forts, its massive walls containing ornate palaces, painted chambers and exquisite jali-screened windows. Below the fort, the old city of Jodhpur is painted in shades of electric blue — the traditional color of Brahmin homes, but now embraced by the whole old city — creating a stunning visual spectacle visible for miles. The Jaswant Thada cenotaph, a white marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, offers beautiful views of the fort. Umaid Bhawan Palace — partly a royal residence, partly a heritage hotel and partly a museum — is one of India's last great palace-building projects. Jodhpur's Sardar Market and Clock Tower area is one of Rajasthan's most atmospheric bazaars.
