Trip Overview
Gulmarg — meaning Meadow of Flowers in Kashmiri — is situated at 2,730 metres in the Pir Panjal range, just 56 km from Srinagar, and is one of the most dramatic destinations in all of India. In winter it receives consistent snowfall from December to March, making it one of Asia's finest ski destinations. In summer it transforms into a wildflower paradise with the famous Khilanmarg meadow carpeted in alpine blooms visible from 3,000 metres above sea level. The Gulmarg Gondola is the centrepiece of any visit — a two-phase cable car system that is the world's highest operating gondola. Phase 1 carries you from Gulmarg at 2,600 metres to Kongdori at 3,100 metres in 15 minutes — a breathtaking ride above pine forests with Nanga Parbat (8,126 metres, the world's 9th highest peak) appearing in the distance. Phase 2 continues from Kongdori to Apharwat Peak at 4,200 metres — above the treeline into a dramatic snow world where you can see into Azad Kashmir and towards the Karakoram range. Even in July there is 10 to 15 feet of snow at Apharwat. Khilanmarg — the winter ski slope and summer flower meadow — is a 6 km walk or short pony ride from Gulmarg town, offering sweeping views of the entire Kashmir Valley floor. Alpather Lake, a pristine glacial lake at 4,100 metres below Apharwat Peak, has ice floating on its surface even in summer. The Strawberry Fields of Gulmarg produce extraordinarily sweet strawberries available fresh in season. Asia's highest 18-hole golf course at Gulmarg is a bucket-list experience for golf enthusiasts at any level.
