Trip Overview

The Andaman Islands are India's premier scuba diving destination — and for good reason. The combination of crystal-clear water (15–30 metre visibility), pristine coral reefs largely unaffected by bleaching, diverse marine life, and unique dive sites including an active volcano makes the Andamans a destination that rivals Thailand's Similan Islands and the Maldives for underwater quality. The star attraction for experienced divers is Barren Island — India's only active volcano, rising dramatically from the sea 135 km northeast of Port Blair. Dive the volcanic crater slope encountering manta rays, reef sharks, giant moray eels, and Napoleon wrasse in water so clear it feels like flying. Beginner divers are excellently served by the shallow reefs of Havelock's Nemo Reef and Elephant Beach, where PADI-certified instructors offer both Discover Scuba sessions and full Open Water courses. Beyond diving, the adventure menu is extensive — sea kayaking through mangrove creeks, deep-sea sport fishing, trekking through the Jarawa tribal reserve buffer forests (under regulations), night snorkelling over bioluminescent corals, and a glass-bottom boat tour over the UNESCO-listed Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor. This is a true adventure holiday, and the Andaman Islands deliver an experience unlike any other in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Andaman Islands good for scuba diving?

Yes — the Andamans are India's best scuba diving destination. Water visibility averages 15–25 metres (often 30m), sea temperatures are 27–30°C year-round, and the marine biodiversity is extraordinary. The reefs here have been relatively undisturbed, with vibrant hard and soft corals, rich fish populations, and regular large-animal encounters including manta rays and reef sharks.

What is Barren Island and why is it a famous dive site?

Barren Island, 135 km from Port Blair, is India's only active volcano and one of South Asia's most spectacular dive sites. The underwater volcanic rock formations, exceptionally clear water, and large marine life make it exceptional. Dives here regularly feature manta rays, white-tip reef sharks, giant moray eels, and huge schools of fish. It requires a live-aboard boat trip from Port Blair.

Do I need to be a certified diver to participate?

No. This package includes 2 beginner Discover Scuba Diving sessions at shallow, calm sites suitable for complete beginners — no certification needed. The other 2 advanced dives (Nemo Reef + Barren Island) are for certified divers (Open Water or above). If you wish to do all 4 as a beginner, we can arrange PADI Open Water certification (3-day course) as an add-on.

What is bioluminescence and where can I see it in the Andamans?

Bioluminescence is produced by microscopic marine organisms (dinoflagellates) that emit blue light when disturbed. In the Andamans, Neil Island's Laxmanpur Beach is the most reliable spot — walk into the gentle waves at night on a moonless evening and the water glows electric blue around your feet. Best October–April.

What sea creatures can I expect to see diving in the Andamans?

Common sightings: clownfish (nemo), parrotfish, Napoleon wrasse, giant moray eels, lionfish, stonefish, octopus, sea turtles, white-tip and black-tip reef sharks, giant trevally, manta rays (at Barren Island), and occasional whale sharks. The coral gardens are home to an extraordinary diversity of hard and soft corals.

What is the best base island for scuba diving in the Andamans?

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) is the best base for diving — it has the most PADI dive centres, the most varied dive sites, and excellent accommodation. Port Blair is necessary for logistics and Barren Island live-aboards. Neil Island is better for snorkelling and quiet beach stays than diving.

Is the Andaman trip possible on a budget?

The biggest cost is the flight to Port Blair. Once there, budget options exist for accommodation and ferries. The package price of ₹28,999 covers all activities — outside the package, meals are reasonable (₹200–₹500 per meal at beach shacks). The Andamans are significantly cheaper than international dive destinations like the Maldives or Thailand for comparable underwater quality.
