Trip Overview

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit in the Bay of Bengal, closer to Myanmar and Thailand than to the Indian mainland. Their isolation has preserved something extraordinary: clear turquoise waters with 20+ metre visibility, vibrant coral reefs untouched by mass tourism, dense tropical rainforests, mangrove creeks, and beaches so pristine they appear unreal. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island has been ranked among Asia's best beaches multiple times — and when you stand there watching the sun set over the Andaman Sea, you'll understand why. But the Andamans are not only about nature. Port Blair, the capital, holds the Cellular Jail — a deeply moving colonial monument where India's freedom fighters were imprisoned and tortured by the British. The Sound & Light Show here is one of India's most powerful heritage experiences, bringing to life the stories of Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and hundreds of others who suffered in these cells. This 5-day island escape begins in Port Blair with its history and heritage, then ferries you to Havelock Island (Neil's Cove, Radhanagar Beach, elephant beach snorkelling) before ending at the quieter Neil Island with its coral gardens and night swimming. It is the perfect combination of history, nature, and tropical relaxation — and unlike anything else India has to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reach the Andaman Islands from Delhi or Chandigarh?

The only practical way to reach the Andaman Islands is by flight to Port Blair (Veer Savarkar International Airport). Direct flights operate from Delhi (3.5 hrs), Kolkata (2 hrs), Chennai (2 hrs), and Bangalore. Indigo, Air India, and SpiceJet are the main carriers. Plan to book flights well in advance as Port Blair has limited capacity.

Do I need a permit to visit the Andaman Islands?

Indian nationals do not need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for the main Andaman Islands (Port Blair, Havelock, Neil, Baratang). Foreign nationals (except certain nationalities) receive an entry permit on arrival at Port Blair Airport. The Nicobar Islands require special permits and are generally not open to tourists.

What is the Cellular Jail and why is it significant?

The Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) in Port Blair was built by the British from 1896–1906 to incarcerate Indian independence activists, labelled as criminals. It held notable freedom fighters including Veer Savarkar and Batukeshwar Dutt. The cell structure was designed to prevent prisoners from communicating. Today it's a National Memorial. The evening Sound & Light Show is a deeply emotional tribute to the martyrs.

Is scuba diving available in the Andamans? Is it good?

Yes — the Andaman Islands are one of India's best scuba diving destinations. The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park (Wandoor), Havelock Island (Nemo Reef), and Barren Island (India's only active volcano) are world-class dive sites. Visibility often exceeds 20 metres. PADI-certified dive centres operate on Havelock Island offering beginner and advanced dives.

What is the best time to visit the Andaman Islands?

October to May is the best time — calm seas, excellent water visibility, and all ferry/water activities operational. November–April is peak season with perfect beach weather. June–September (monsoon) brings rough seas that shut ferries and water sports.

Can I see bioluminescent plankton in the Andamans?

Yes! Neil Island's beaches occasionally display bioluminescence (glowing plankton in the waves) at night, particularly from November to April. A walk along Laxmanpur Beach after dark on a moonless night can reward you with a spectacular natural light show.

Is the Andaman trip suitable for families with children?

Absolutely! The calm, shallow lagoons of Neil Island's Bharatpur Beach and Havelock's Elephant Beach are perfect for children. Glass-bottom boat rides allow non-swimmers to see the coral reef. The Cellular Jail and Ross Island offer educational heritage experiences for older children. Families consistently rate the Andamans as one of India's best beach destinations.
