Trip Overview

Punjab's Sikh pilgrimage circuit is among the most profound spiritual journeys in India — one that weaves together faith, history, sacrifice and community across landscapes dotted with gurdwaras, forts and memorial sites. For Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike, the journey from Amritsar to Anandpur Sahib offers a deeply moving encounter with one of the world's youngest and most egalitarian religions. Sri Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) in Amritsar is where the journey begins — the Akal Takht, one of the five Takhts (seats of temporal authority) of Sikhism, stands adjacent. Here, the Sikh religious and political establishment has deliberated since 1606. The morning experience of Amrit Vela kirtan, the langar and the parikrama (circumambulation of the sacred pool) sets the spiritual tone for the entire trip. Anandpur Sahib, 80 km from Chandigarh in the Shivalik foothills, is where the Khalsa Panth was born on Baisakhi 1699 — when Guru Gobind Singh called upon five volunteers to offer their heads, founding the order of the Khalsa. The Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib here is one of the five Takhts. The Virasat-e-Khalsa museum, designed by Moshe Safdie (architect of Habitat 67), is a world-class interpretive museum telling 500 years of Sikh history through breathtaking architecture and exhibits. Fatehgarh Sahib, the martyrdom site of Guru Gobind Singh's younger sons — Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, who were bricked alive by the Mughal governor at ages 9 and 7 — is one of the most emotionally significant sites in Sikhism. NorthYatra's 4-day circuit connects all these sacred places with comfort, knowledge and reverence.
