Trip Overview

Punjab is far more than the Golden Temple — and yet most tourists never venture beyond Amritsar. This 5-day tour is designed for travellers who want to peel back the layers of this multifaceted state: its royal Sikh and Mughal heritage, its modernist planned capital, its extraordinary rural traditions, and its surprisingly rich wildlife and wetlands. Amritsar is the spiritual and emotional heart — no visit to Punjab is complete without its Golden Temple, Wagah Border and sobering Jallianwala Bagh. But then the journey pivots south to Patiala, the former princely state whose Maharajas were among the most flamboyant in colonial India. Qila Mubarak (the magnificent Baroque-influenced royal palace complex), Sheesh Mahal, Dukhniwaran Sahib Gurdwara and the famous Patiala Peg (legendary oversize whisky measure) all contribute to a city that surprises at every turn. Chandigarh — Le Corbusier's utopian planned city and one of Asia's first post-independence urban experiments — is a fascinating contrast: wide boulevards, sector-based planning, the surreal Rock Garden of Nek Chand (built entirely from industrial waste and urban rubble), and the serene Sukhna Lake. The Ropar Wetland (Rupnagar Wetland) on the Sutlej River is an Important Bird Area harbouring migratory species including bar-headed geese, mallard ducks, and painted storks. It is one of Punjab's best-kept ecological secrets. NorthYatra's Punjab Heritage & Nature Tour weaves all of this together into one rich, immersive journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Rock Garden of Chandigarh?

The Rock Garden is one of India's most visited tourist attractions — an 80-acre sculpture garden built entirely from industrial and urban waste (broken ceramics, electrical equipment, bones, glass bangles) by government road inspector Nek Chand starting in 1958, in secret, on government land. It was discovered in 1975 and instead of demolition, the government made it a public space. It now attracts over 5,000 visitors daily.

Is Ropar Wetland a good birding destination?

Yes. Ropar Wetland is an Important Bird Area (IBA) on the Sutlej River with 150+ bird species recorded. Winter (November to February) is best for migratory waterfowl. The wetland is a short drive from Chandigarh and Anandpur Sahib — making it easy to combine with other Punjab destinations.

What is Patiala famous for?

Patiala is famous for: Patiala patiala salwar (distinctive voluminous trousers), Patiala Peg (the double measure of whisky that Maharaja Bhupinder Singh allegedly mandated for his court), Phulkari embroidery, Patiala jutti shoes, and the spectacular Qila Mubarak royal palace complex. The city retains its old royal character.

How far is Chandigarh from Amritsar?

Amritsar to Chandigarh is approximately 230 km — about 3.5 to 4 hours by road on NH44. By Shatabdi Express train, the journey takes approximately 2 hours.

Is the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh worth visiting?

Absolutely. The Capitol Complex — comprising the Secretariat, High Court and Vidhan Sabha — is Le Corbusier's magnum opus and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016. The Open Hand Monument (the official symbol of Chandigarh) and the Geometric Hill are within the complex. Entry requires prior permission for some buildings — our team assists with this.
