Trip Overview

The Manali-Leh Highway is not simply a road — it is a rite of passage. The 479 km route from Manali to Leh is one of the world's great mountain drives, crossing five passes all above 4,500 metres, traversing some of the highest motorable terrain on earth, and delivering you — breathless and awestruck — into the lunar landscape of Ladakh. This 10-day tour covers the Manali-Leh drive AND Ladakh's greatest attractions, making it the most complete Ladakh adventure available. The drive from Manali to Leh over two days passes through Rohtang Pass (3,978 m), the Atal Tunnel, the Lahaul Valley, Keylong, the dramatic Baralacha La (4,890 m), the infinite Moray Plains, Lachung La (5,079 m), the highest point of the journey at Tanglang La (5,328 m) and the descent into the Indus Valley at Upshi. Each pass is a world unto itself — frost-shattered rock faces, snow-fed streams, prayer flags snapping in thin air and an overwhelming silence broken only by the wind. Once in Leh, the package covers all the city's key sights over two days of acclimatisation and sightseeing before heading to the high valleys — Nubra with its Bactrian camel dunes and Diskit Monastery, Pangong with its colour-shifting lake and a night in a lakeside camp under the most star-filled sky you will ever see. The return to Leh includes Chang La and the monastery circuit — Hemis, Thiksey, Shey — and ends with a flight out of Leh airport. This tour is best done June to September when all passes are open. It is designed for adventurous travellers in good health — not extreme athletes, but people with curiosity, flexibility and the desire to see something truly extraordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Manali-Leh Highway open?

The Manali-Leh Highway is open from approximately June 1 to October 31 (sometimes November). The exact opening date depends on snow clearance by the Border Roads Organisation. June and September are the least crowded months. July-August is peak season.

How difficult is the Manali to Leh drive?

It is a long and high-altitude drive — not technical but physically demanding due to altitude and road conditions. Day 1 from Manali to Jispa is 10 to 11 hours, Day 2 from Jispa to Leh is 8 to 9 hours. Our experienced drivers handle the route safely.

What vehicle is used for the Manali to Leh drive?

We use a private Innova Crysta or Scorpio for couples and small groups, and a Tempo Traveller for groups of 6 to 12. All vehicles are serviced and driven by experienced high-altitude drivers.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Leh Ladakh?

We strongly recommend travel insurance with medical evacuation cover. At 3,500 to 5,300 metres altitude, medical emergencies require helicopter evacuation to Leh hospital, which can cost Rs 1 to 3 lakh without insurance.

How fit do I need to be for this Manali-Leh-Ladakh trip?

General fitness — comfortable walking a few km, no serious cardiac or respiratory conditions. There is minimal trekking (monastery walks, sand dune exploration). The main challenge is altitude adjustment, which we handle with the acclimatisation days.

Can we return via the Srinagar-Leh Highway instead of flying?

Yes. If you prefer to exit via Srinagar, we extend by 1 day (2-day Srinagar-Leh highway drive via Kargil and Zoji La) and you fly or take a train from Jammu. Contact NorthYatra for the pricing of this variant.

Are there ATMs in Leh?

Yes, Leh has ATMs (SBI, J&K Bank) but they frequently run out of cash in peak season. Carry sufficient cash (Rs 20,000-30,000 per person) for Nubra and Pangong where ATMs do not exist.
