Trip Overview
Bir Billing is the paragliding capital of Asia — a statement that is not marketing hyperbole but official recognition. Billing, the take-off site at 2,400 metres above Bir, is rated among the world's top paragliding destinations and hosted the Paragliding World Cup twice, drawing elite pilots from over 40 countries. The site's combination of reliable thermals, a perfect take-off plateau, a long extended ridge and a clean landing zone in the Bir village below make it technically outstanding. For the average traveller, what makes Bir Billing extraordinary is the tandem flight experience — soaring above the Kangra Valley's patchwork of tea gardens, forests and villages for 25 to 40 minutes with the Dhauladhar range as a dramatic backdrop. Bir itself is a gentle, unpretentious settlement — a Tibetan colony established in 1966 with monasteries, small guesthouses, organic cafes and a community of monks, artists and travellers that gives it a wonderfully alternative atmosphere. Sherabling Monastery (Palchen Choekhor Ling) is one of the largest and most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in India — the seat of the 12th Tai Situpa, Rinpoche, with impressive assembly halls, accommodation for 1,000 monks and a programme of Buddhist teachings and meditation retreats. The monastery is open to visitors daily and the sound of monks chanting the morning puja from 6 AM is an experience not to be missed. The Bir-Billing landscape beyond the flight zone includes the Bir Tibetan colony with its hand-painted mani stones and prayer flags, the Palampur tea gardens 20 km away and the Baijnath Shiva Temple (12th century) en route — one of the finest examples of early medieval temple architecture in Himachal Pradesh.
