Trip Overview

Ayodhya holds a place in the Hindu consciousness unlike any other city — it is the birthplace of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu and the hero of the Ramayana. For millions of devotees, a visit to Ayodhya is a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage and a profound act of faith. The city has undergone a remarkable transformation with the construction of the grand Ram Mandir at Ram Janmabhoomi — a magnificent temple complex inaugurated in January 2024 that draws millions of pilgrims monthly. This 3-day pilgrimage tour is designed for devotees who wish to experience Ayodhya's complete spiritual circuit. The Ram Janmabhoomi complex with its newly constructed temple is the centrepiece — a vast religious complex on the site believed to be the exact birthplace of Lord Rama. Hanuman Garhi, a 10th-century hilltop temple dedicated to the beloved deity of devotion, commands sweeping views over the city and is the first temple most pilgrims visit upon arrival. Kanak Bhawan, the golden palace-temple where Rama and Sita's idol-images reside, is among Ayodhya's most beloved shrines. The Saryu River — Ayodhya's sacred river — is the city's spiritual heart, just as the Ganges is for Varanasi. An evening aarti on the Saryu ghats and a ritual bath at Ram Ghat complete the pilgrimage experience. The tour also visits the 84 Kosi Parikrama route highlights and the Tulsi Smarak Bhawan — the memorial to Saint Tulsidas, who composed the Ramcharitmanas here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of Ayodhya in Hinduism?

Ayodhya is one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism — believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and hero of the Ramayana. It is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana, Puranas, and Mahabharata. For Hindus worldwide, Ayodhya holds the same significance that Mecca holds for Muslims or Jerusalem for Christians.

What is the Ram Mandir and when was it inaugurated?

The Ram Mandir (Ram Temple) at Ram Janmabhoomi is a grand Nagara-style stone temple built at the site believed to be Lord Rama's exact birthplace. It was inaugurated with the Pran Pratishtha ceremony on 22 January 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The temple complex spans 70 acres and draws millions of pilgrims monthly from across India and the world.

How do I reach Ayodhya from Delhi or Chandigarh?

Ayodhya has its own Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ) with flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and other cities. By train: the Ayodhya Junction is well connected — Vande Bharat Express runs from Delhi (Anand Vihar) and takes about 5 hours. Road: Ayodhya is on NH27, about 130 km from Lucknow.

What are the main temples to visit in Ayodhya?

Key temples: Ram Janmabhoomi (Ram Mandir), Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Nageshwarnath Temple (one of Ayodhya's oldest Shiva temples), Sita ki Rasoi, Tretha Ke Thakur, Dashrath Mahal, Mani Parvat, Lakshman Ghat temples, and the 84 Kosi Parikrama temples.

What is the best time to visit Ayodhya?

October to March is the best time — pleasant weather for walking the ghats and temple circuit. Ram Navami (Chaitra month, March–April) is the most auspicious time — a massive fair with millions of pilgrims. Diwali (when Ayodhya celebrates Deepotsav with lakhs of lamps) and Kartik Purnima are also spectacular.

Is there a dress code for visiting Ram Mandir?

Modest clothing is recommended — covered shoulders, no shorts for men. For women, a dupatta or scarf is appreciated. Shoes must be removed before entering temple premises. Phones and cameras are generally not permitted inside the main sanctum. Lockers are provided at the entrance.

Can I combine Ayodhya with Varanasi in one trip?

Yes! Ayodhya and Varanasi are both in Uttar Pradesh and can be combined into a 5–6 day pilgrimage circuit. Add Prayagraj (Triveni Sangam) in between for the complete UP spiritual triangle. NorthYatra offers customised UP pilgrimage packages covering all three cities.
